Summer Looks for the Natural Makeup Lover

Add it to the list of reasons why summer is the best...

Summer makeup is to die for.

Makeup is fun year-round, but there is something extra wonderful about the summer. The sun is out, everyone is a little more tan, and a little "glow" on the skin is more than welcome.

Many beauty experts cite summer as the best time to rock lipsticks in crazy, bright colors or to wear only products loaded with glitter, but how can girls who love the more natural look switch up their routine for summer? Here are my recommendations:

1. Switch to a lighter base

A little sun on the skin (when you're protected by SPF) is great for drying up acne and leaving your skin clearer, so summer is the perfect time to go a little lighter on your foundation. Switching from a fuller coverage foundation to a Tinted Moisturizer or BB/CC Cream is an easy way to make your look a little more summery and fresh.

My recommendation: Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done (Hybrid Complexion Perfector)

This is a product I've been testing out this month and really loving. One pump gives you extremely sheer coverage, so I've been going for two for the perfect amount. It easily blends in with your fingers, so I don't even need a brush. Plus, it has SPF 20, so it is a good one for when you're going to be outside! My shade: Light.

2. Go bronze on the eyes

When your skin tone is a little bronzy, bronze tones on the eyes are super flattering and make your look very cohesive and natural. I love to just choose one golden-bronze shadow and go for a "one-shadow-look," blending the same color all over the lid, up into the crease, and smudging a little below my bottom lash line. Super beautiful, but also super quick and easy!

My recommendation: NARS Duo Eyeshadow - Kalahari (specifically the bronze shade on the left)

This duo is great in general, but as you can see from the picture, I have really gotten great use out of the bronzy shade. It is gorgeous on the eyes and makes the perfect one-shadow-look.

3. Try face products with a little shimmer

Too much glow is never the goal, but using a bronzer or blush with a little shimmer in it can give you just the right amount. It's also a great option for you if using an actual highlighter is a scary thought. This gives your cheeks a natural-looking glow and saves you the trouble of having to use a second highlighting product!

My recommendation: Milani Baked Powder Blush - Luminoso

This is a cult favorite in the beauty world, and for good reason! I find that on my fair skin, it's a little too peachy for me in the wintertime, but in the summer and against a bit of a tan, it's ideal. The sheen is amazing but it thankfully does not have big chunks of glitter in it. Instead, it's super smooth and makes you look healthy and beautiful! Also, it's a drugstore product, so you're not going to be spending a fortune on it. Win-win.

4. Go for a brightly colored lipstick, but in a sheer formula

This final tip is my favorite. I am a neutral lip gal 99% of the time, so anything too brightly colored scares me. Going for a brighter color than you might usually is not nearly as scary when you do it in a sheer formula. That way, you get a wash of that brighter, more summery color, but it isn't the focal point of your whole face. Usually, sheer lip products are more moisturizing and easy to apply, and that is always desirable in the summer!

My recommendation: Chantecaille Hydra Chic Lipstick - Arctic Rose

Although the name suggests "winter," this lipstick is my absolute go-to in the summer time. In the tube, it looks bright pink, but the sheer formula brings it down to the perfect level for me. The formula also means that I don't have to spend any time at all applying it; it goes on like a lip balm!
